Culture and history info

Culture and history infoThe presence of inhabitants in this area is already witnessed in the Greek period (VIII-III century) thanks to the discovery of finds of the time. The name derives from an old church on the coast, which was destroyed during the earthquake of 1963 and dedicated to the Madonna del Focallo, but the term derives from Ficallo which probably means "place full of algae" Many historical events have characterized the area, such as the First Punic War and the Allied landing in Sicily on 10 July 1943.

Ispica, the ancient Hispicaefundus, called, until 1935, Spaccaforno, is located on a hill about 170 meters from the sea level which is 6 km away. Its name derives from a flume, Hyspa. For some people the name derives from the Latin name Speca (caves), referring to Spaccaforno (Spacca, phonetic derivation of Ispica, and oven, latin word used to signify the oven-shaped tombs that are located near the inhabited area) (the oven word could derive from the latin fundus). After the earthquake of 1963, some neighborhoods were rebuilt around the churches remained (even if damaged) of S. Antonio, del Carmine, the Minori Osservanti, the others were built anew on the Calandra hill with wide and straight streets. While the archaeological findings testify an uninterrupted presence of the site from the Bronze Age, the oldest news reported to the city is in a bull of Pope Alexander III in 1168. At the end of the century. XIII the land of Spaccaforno was aggregated to the County of Modica. In 1393 the Castle of Ispica is included among the possessions of Bernardo Cabrera. The city, in 1453, was ceded by the Cabrera to Antonio Caruso di Noto, Rational Master of the Kingdom. In 1493 Isabella Caruso married Francesco II Statella, descendant of the Counts of the County of Statel in Flanders. As a result of this marriage the successors of Francis, in 1537, assumed the possession and the government of the city.
